A.B.C. Program

...Achieving Behavioral Change

What is the A.B.C. Program?

The A.B.C. program is a highly individualized service designed to identify and target your child’s social skills and behavioral challenges directly in his or her “real world” surroundings. This program is ideal for those children who would benefit from a unique and specialized approach to address his or her needs.

How is this program different from social skills classes or coaching?

Classes and coaching take place in an office setting. With the A.B.C. program, we work to make positive change directly in your child’s environment. Interacting with our students beyond the walls of our office allows us the unique opportunity to:

Establish an individualized social skills training plan for your child

Observe strengths and weaknesses in your child’s actual environment

Address issues as they occur

Teach alternative/appropriate behaviors

Introduce effective social skills techniques

Create incentive systems

Work with parents to use effective strategies and consequences

Consult with teachers, childcare providers, and/or other professionals

Modify situations home and/or school environments as needed

Why are social skills so important anyway?

Your child uses social skills every day – playing with friends, greeting teachers and neighbors, asking for help, managing emotions and behaviors, solving problems. The list goes on and on! Using these skills appropriately greatly influences how other people treat your child and how well he or she is able to function in the world. Well developed social skills help your child get along with others and make appropriate decisions in social and academic situations.  In fact, studies suggest that social skills are far better predictors of success and well-being than academic intelligence!

Why do some children have difficulty learning or using effective social skills?

A 92673

For many children, these skills do not come naturally. They do not simply learn by observing others. In these circumstances, even a parent's heroic efforts to address their child's challenging social behaviors may not be enough.  Children experience social skills deficits due to a variety of reasons such as: poor understanding of what skills to use and when; developmental or emotional difficulties; family, peer, or school stress; difficulties in “reading” the cues of others; under-developed problem solving skills or self confidence; impulsivity and attention issues; learning disabilities.
